The Kansas City Recycling, Reuse, Reduce Smartphone Application (KC-R3 App)
Comments by Rick Usher - this program will pair nicely with the City's Digital Upcycling Program which is being developed in partnership with Connecting for Good and Surplus Exchange. Digital Upcycling is also part of the City's commitment as a certified eSteward Enterprise to ensure environmentally and socially responsible reuse of electronic equipment. We would be interested in bringing in more partners to implement this program, including:
- The Surplus Exchange
- Full Employment Council
- Connecting for Good
- Bridging the Gap
- Kansas City Design Center - Downtown Recycling System Visioning Study
- Skunkworks partners to be named at a later date (this is big)
This program will also pair well with the City's Digital Scholars Program which is providing employment opportunities for KC's youth interested in technology and digital inclusion.
Smartphones can be repurposed for a number of valuable uses and with KC's growing smart city initiatives, reuse of smartphones as smart city-purposed devices presents an interesting opportunity.

With the addition of recycled computing devices of all types, this program could grow into an advanced manufacturing and tech jobs accelerator for the KC region.
